A sizeable, animated town, Kalutara is centred around a chaotic   junction and extends from this point for several miles in both directions, the   resort area encompassing the neighbouring hamlets of Kuduwaskaduwa,   Mahawaskaduwa and Katukurunda. The coast road itself is densely lined with   modern businesses, a motley collection of shops and myriad stalls. The town   boasts 3 striking and impressive religious buildings which dominate the skyline   – a Buddhist temple, a Catholic church and a mosque. Formerly the island’s   centre for the spice trade, it is now known for its basketwork and is at the hub   of Sri Lanka’s growing wine industry.
