Kitulgala is the beautiful location of the 1957 Oscar Award winning film “Bridge on the River Kwai”. The remains of the old bridge no longer exist as the bridge was blown up at the end of the film as part of the climax of the story. Its popular place for film buffs and tourists to visit on the way and back from the hills. Exiting to the Hatton side of Kitulgala about a few kilometers away you will see a clearly labeled sign pointing down to the river. The place where the bridge was constructed filmed and destroyed.
