The area from Galle down to Hambantota in the extreme south east coast are far less touristy than the busier west coast but dreamy stretches of palm fringed sand on some of the prettiest palm fringed bays in the country are found on this stretch of coast.

Mirissa is perhaps one of the best locations in the world for watching Blue Whales and Sperm Whales, two of the most sought – after marine mammals. This location is also popular for Deep Sea Fishing, River Trips, Snorkeling and Bird watching, Whilst, Weligama is a unique Bay famous for its remarkable fisherman doing stilt fishing and hand made lace-making.

Rekawa beach located 10Km east of Tangalle is one of the prime locations for Sea Turtles who swim over the oceans into their natal beach for the sole purpose of hatching .Rekawa beach is visited by five different species throughout the year and the best time to see turtle is the period of November to April.The Deep South is also home to numerous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. yala National park is famous for the elusive leopards. Bundala National Park is popular for its many varieties of bird species besides the spotting of other animals.

Sri Lanka’s second International Airport, launched this year in March 2013 is located in Mattala, a small town located 15 Km north of Habantota.
